Writing about yourself can arguably be the hardest thing to do. How far do you go back? What do I share? How do I get to the point? How do I make a connection?
One major thing I’ve learned from designing websites is that the more copy, the best conversion rate you have on the page. This can be due to SEO, but it’s also because when you share more (but relevant) information, you give the visitor an opportunity to connect with you. You want to be thorough, but you also want to give the right information.
In the post I’m going to share simple steps to writing the about page for your website, but I would like to preface this post first:
Writing my about page took me the longest to do because I wanted it to be right and speak to the right audience. While you’re writing your about page, keep in mind who your ideal client is and think about how you can relate to that person. If you’re not sure who your ideal client is, you need to do that before even creating your website and I created an Ideal Client Workbook to help you define who this client is.
Not your hands typing on the computer, not your back turned to the camera, a picture of your beautiful face smiling at the camera. Why? Studies show that when someone can make eye contact with a person (even through a computer screen), they form a stronger connection. In this case, a stronger connection would mean trusting you to hire you for your services.
This is especially important if you’re a 1-1 consulting business, such as, a life coach or personal trainer because you’ll be working on enhancing someone’s day to day life. You target audience wants to make a connection with you!
Your mission statement should towards the top of the page and should explain who you are, what you do and who you service.
For example, Lila Rayne is one on one life coach who helps young women find their purpose & live a happier, healthier life.
This is quick and easy and gets straight to the point so the visitor knows exactly what they’re looking at and how you can help them.
YOU are what makes your brand and we want to know all about who we’re working with. As I mentioned earlier, it’s easy to make a connection with someone when you’re telling them exactly who you are and how you got here. Again, especially if you’re a one on one consult, you want your visitor to know the real YOU so they can relate!
These are all areas of your life that someone can relate to and create a connection with themselves. Don’t be shy, people love to know these things and if they don’t, they might not be the right client for you!
So now that we know all about you, how can we work with you? Make sure to put every way that someone can work with you or get to know you better. For example, if you have one service package, put that there along with your blog and instagram link. This way, if someone doesn’t want your service RIGHT NOW, they can still stay connected with you via social media or your blog!
Have a least one call to action on your about page. Whether it’s to get in touch, get on your email list or follow you on social media, have one super easy way to stay connected. This way, not matter if they decide to contact you for your services or not, they don’t leave your website and forget about you. If they’re on your email list or follow you on social media and you can touch them a few times (marketing touch, not literal touch), they start to build trust and get to know you.
I hope this helps you in writing your about page and knowing the right information to put in there! Don’t want to do your about page on your own? Or your website at all? Shoot me an email & we’ll work on it together!
