how to ditch your 9-5 mindset

How to Ditch your 9-5 Mindset and rewrite your limiting beliefs.

Share

Today’s episode I am diving in on how to ditch your 9-5 mindset and how to rewrite your limiting beliefs you might not even know are holding you back from success. We’re talking the stigma of “shoulds” and “supposed to’s” around your work, defining what success means to your and restructuring your days to work for you, rather than against you. Mastering your Mindset is the key to success in entrepreneurship and this topic is something I don’t think is talked about enough so I can’t wait to dive in.

So, we are diving into a little bit of mindset today and this is a topic that I discuss regularly and a practice I work on for myself every single day. I believe that the key to successful entrepreneurship and business in general is a high-vibe mindset. What I mean by this, is if you are actively aware of your habits, thoughts and actions and constantly working on being the best person you can, not only will your personal life improve, but the way you run your business, how you serve your clients and just the way you show up as a business owner in general.

If you feel like your business is running you, you’re run down or you get frustrated with work and your clients easily, then it probably stems from the way you’re structuring your days and your overall mindset about what your days “should” look like, rather than what works best for you.

First, let’s talk about what a 9-5 mindset is:

  • You go into your job
  • Do maybe 5 hours of actual work
  • Busy work for 2 hours
  • Maybe take a lunch break, talk to co-workers, browse Facebook and then go home.
  • So your days are filled with fluff and knowing that you have to be in one spot for those 8 hours or whatever and that’s considered “work”.

A successful day is considered how many hours you work. I remember one time I was at happy hour… that’s not what success or hard work is and that’s the 9-5 mindset. There’s a stigma around you’re successful and important and good at your job, if you work a lot of hours.

So, this is how I define the 9-5 mindset # of hours you work = success. If you came from a corporate setting like me, or not even a corporate setting because this is how we’ve measured success, this 9-5 mindset is hard to break.

How to ditch the 9-5 mindset and rewrite these limiting beliefs.

This is where the “shoulds” and the “supposed to’s” come in and then we sabotage them. We think that because we’re working it “ should” be a lot of work and we’re “supposed” to work for x amount of hours x amount of days/week.

But listen, you started this business for freedom, to make your own schedule and just enjoy life more, so there’s no reason to torture yourself with the shoulds and supposed to’s.

Limiting belief one:

  • # of hours I work = success
    • You’re doing more in those 5 hours than in the 8 hours because there’s no busy work
    • Rewrite: I fill my days with intentional and purposeful work
    • Download my productivity planner – link in show notes

Limiting belief two:

  • Work can’t be fun
    • This could be because your parents didn’t live like this, or because you didn’t grow up surrounded by this.
    • Listen to my intro podcast (just speaking from experience)
    • Rewrite: i’m lucky to live in an era where I can have a fun job and work with clients all over the world.

These are the two most common and I don’t want to bombard you with too much right now, so my best advice would be to really think about the life you’re trying to cultivate. Why did you start your business in the first place? Was it to spend more time with friends/family? Is it to travel more? Is it to help people? Is it to travel more? Be a stay at home mom?

Really think about that and then structure your days with that and most importantly, release the shoulds and supposed to’s. There’s no right/wrong way to do this, which is why entrepreneurship is both exciting, but also really hard.
