Avoiding Comparison: How to Stay Connected to Your Purpose

Share

I’m going to be honest, the last few weeks have been a complete whirlwind. I’ve barely had enough time to come up and breathe, before I have to dive back down into work and, well, life. When I do come up for air, I find myself asking questions like,  Am I doing this right? Am I even good at this? How are THEY successful?

This fear of what everyone else is doing, sometimes keeps me up at night worrying that i’m not working hard enough and making mental lists of what I have to do to be like everyone else. But that’s exactly it, it’s just fear.

Does this sound like you? Whether it’s in business or life in general, you find yourself comparing your life to others even when you have no idea who this person or business is.

When we’re so worried about what other people are doing, it puts the focus on the wrong person and clouds our vision of what’s important to us and not everyone else.

“There is no one like you & that is your superpower”

In this article i’m sharing some techniques that you can use when you catch yourself going down the comparison rabbit hole and how you can stay connected to your purpose.

Take a break from social media

For me, the biggest indicator that i’m starting to lose site of my purpose is when I am constantly checking social media. I start going to pages wondering who other designers are working with, asking myself how I can get a client like that or why I don’t have that many followers.

Does this sound like something similar that you do? No, just no. When you catch yourself doing this, immediately put down your phone. It’s so easy to compare yourself to others when we’re mostly posting positive things about our life.

The bottom line is, you don’t know someone’s story – where they came from and what they did to get where they are, and they don’t know yours. Everyone starts from somewhere and by checking social media regularly, you can completely lost sight of that.

Remember why you started

When i’m so worried about what other people are doing, I forget why I started. I have my head buried in my computer working so hard to be as successful as the people i’m comparing myself to that when I finally get the chance to pick my head up, i’m in so deep that I forget what i’m even doing in the first place.

If you find yourself doing this, reconnect with your purpose. Either read your mission statement or write it down a few times. This will help you remember why you started your business in the first place and connect you with your work, clients and products instead of focusing on others.

When it all becomes too much, write it down. If you keep everything in your head and don’t talk or write it out, it takes up so much space that there’s no room for what really matters up there. It gives you a moment to yourself to organize your thoughts and sit with them.

This time alone, seeing what you write down on paper, can be a huge eye opener in helping to recognize where you’re distributing your energy.

Don’t forget that everyone starts from somewhere & there is no one in the world like you. Stop comparing yourself to others, because we need what only you have to offer.
